China imposed sanctions on ministers from Paraguay and Belize on October 12, increasing pressure on countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
According to Reuters, the measures target Paraguay’s communications minister Gustavo Villate and Belize’s foreign minister Francis Fonseca.
The restrictions include freezing assets in China, entry bans and prohibitions on business dealings with Chinese organisations. Beijing said the action was intended to protect its sovereignty and oppose Taiwanese independence.
Taiwan condemned the sanctions, while Belize rejected the measures against Fonseca as unwarranted. Paraguay and Belize are among just 12 countries maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.
The sanctions target the officials personally, rather than imposing a broad trade embargo on either country. Nevertheless, they demonstrate how relations with Taiwan can expose foreign governments to direct pressure from Beijing.
The dispute also highlights the limits of commercial diplomacy. Agreements such as the US–China trade-truce extension can ease trade tensions while leaving deeper political disagreements unresolved.
