Tesla’s new Roadster is attracting attention, but Elon Musk says the company’s biggest financial opportunities lie in humanoid robots and autonomous taxis.

“Optimus and Cybercab will be the vast majority of Tesla’s value,” Musk wrote on X, according to Stocktwits.

Tesla shares gained approximately 1% in overnight trading late Sunday, following a 7% decline the previous week.

Why build the Roadster?

Musk’s answer was straightforward: it is “super cool.”

The commercial argument is more practical. Morningstar sees the sports car as a “halo car”, a showcase of Tesla’s engineering that could encourage customers to consider its broader vehicle lineup.

The firm forecasts fewer than 2,000 Roadster deliveries annually once production ramps up. Its potential influence on Tesla’s image could therefore matter more than its direct sales contribution.

Attention turns to earnings

Tesla reports third-quarter results on October 21, giving investors another opportunity to assess progress on robots and robotaxis.

Morningstar expects free cash flow to remain negative for a second consecutive quarter, highlighting the financial demands behind the company’s expansion.

That spending reflects the broader strategy explored in Tesla’s Full Pivot to AI.

The Roadster can bring customers into the showroom. Tesla’s bigger financial test is whether Optimus and Cybercab can deliver the profitable businesses Musk envisions.
