Reddit shares jumped more than 12% on Friday after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the social media platform will join the S&P 500, marking a major milestone just over two years after its public debut.
Reddit will enter the benchmark before trading begins on August 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities, which is being acquired by Equity Residential. The addition could create significant buying pressure because funds tracking the S&P 500 will need to add Reddit shares to their portfolios. JPMorgan estimates these funds may need to purchase around 16.7 million shares.
The rally comes after a difficult year for the stock. Before the announcement, Reddit was down around 30% in 2026 and remained well below its previous record above $270, despite recently reporting strong advertising growth.
Attention is now shifting to Reddit’s next major opportunity: AI. The platform’s huge collection of human conversations and user-generated content could become increasingly valuable for AI training and search. At the same time, AI-powered search creates a risk by reducing the number of users reaching Reddit through traditional search engines.
Investor takeaway: S&P 500 inclusion should bring Reddit greater institutional ownership and near-term demand for its shares. Longer term, investors will be watching whether Reddit can turn its unique data and growing advertising business into sustainable growth while navigating disruption from AI search.
