President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 20% fee on cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the United States is the “guardian” of the strategic waterway.

According to the BBC, Trump also formally notified Congress that fighting with Iran had resumed, alongside the reimposition of a US naval blockade on Tehran.

It remains unclear how the proposed Hormuz fee would be implemented, as international maritime law generally prohibits charging vessels to pass through international waters. Trump suggested that Gulf nations should reimburse the US for securing the shipping route.

Investor takeaway: Any disruption or additional costs for traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil exports, could increase shipping costs and add volatility to energy markets.
