The US Senate Committee on Armed Services has tasked Secretary of Defense Retired General Lloyd Austin with investigating blockchain technology’s potential for enhancing supply chain management and other national security functions within the Department of Defense (DOD). The committee’s report for the fiscal year 2025 emphasizes blockchain’s ability to improve cryptographic integrity, data accuracy, and protection against data manipulation.
The directive includes pilot programs and research efforts in supply chain management, critical infrastructure cybersecurity, and procurement auditability. The DOD must assess the benefits, risks, and feasibility of blockchain implementation, with a briefing due by April 1, 2025.
This move aligns with growing national support for blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies, exemplified by the Republican National Committee’s recent policy platform supporting crypto adoption.
