Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized for cheating on certification tests for seven vehicle models, resulting in the suspension of production for three: Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross. The tests involved outdated data for collision tests, and falsified airbag inflation, rear-seat damage, and engine power tests.
Despite the fraudulent tests, Toyota assured that the safety of existing vehicles, including Corolla and Lexus models, is not affected.
A Japanese government investigation began in January, but the issue does not impact Toyota’s overseas production.
Mazda also reported similar testing irregularities, halting production of the Roadster and Mazda 2. Honda admitted to improper tests on older models, including the Accord, Odyssey, and Fit.
The certification issues, which started surfacing within Toyota group companies two years ago, have tarnished Toyota’s reputation for production excellence.
Toyoda acknowledged the company’s eagerness to complete tests amid a rise in model varieties and pledged ongoing efforts to correct any wrongdoing. Toyota sells over 10 million vehicles globally.
