Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) experienced a widespread outage today, with millions of users reporting disruptions accessing the site and its services. Shortly after the platform went offline, Elon Musk, owner of X, claimed the company had been the victim of a “massive cyber attack.”
In a post made on his personal X account once limited access was restored, Musk stated:
“We are currently dealing with a massive cyber attack targeting X’s core infrastructure. Teams are working around the clock to restore stability. More updates soon.”
Global Outage Sends Users Scrambling
The outage began around 12:00 PM EST, according to Downdetector, with reports quickly flooding in from North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Users experienced issues loading timelines, sending messages, and accessing X Spaces and premium features.
For several hours, X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscribers reported not being able to access additional features tied to their subscriptions.
Musk Points to Coordinated Attack
Musk later elaborated, describing the attack as “highly sophisticated” and suggesting it may have been part of a coordinated effort to disrupt global communications on the platform.
“The nature of this attack suggests highly advanced actors,” Musk wrote.
“We will be transparent with our findings as we continue to investigate.”
Cybersecurity Concerns Mount
This incident adds to growing concerns about cybersecurity vulnerabilities in social media platforms, especially those with significant political and financial influence. X has become a hub for real-time news, crypto communities, and political discourse, making it a high-profile target.
Cybersecurity analysts have speculated that such an attack could be aimed at disrupting financial markets or spreading misinformation, although no official attribution has been made.
Services Slowly Restored
As of this writing, most core services on X appear to be slowly coming back online. The company’s engineering team and third-party cybersecurity experts are working to ensure the platform’s stability and investigate the source of the breach.
Musk promised further updates in the coming hours.
