Starting January 14, 2025, subscription services, including gym memberships, in the United States must implement a “one click-to-cancel” policy.

This regulation, finalized by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), mandates that cancelling subscriptions be as simple and seamless as signing up. Businesses will be required to provide clear subscription terms, obtain explicit consent for any additional charges, and ensure a straightforward cancellation process, free of extra fees or delays.

Companies have until May 14, 2025, to comply fully with these rules.

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

1. Simplified cancellation processes

2. No more forced phone calls or live chats to cancel

3. Clear disclosure of subscription terms

4. Proof of consent required for negative option programs

5. Protection from unexpected charges

Who’s affected?

1. Media & Streaming Services (Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max)

2. Fitness Memberships (Peloton, Planet Fitness)

3. Tech Services (Amazon Prime, Adobe, Microsoft Game Pass)

This can save hundreds of dollars a year, especially when it comes to sneaky free trials that suddenly turn into monthly charges.
