China says Washington is “escalating friction,” not China, as both sides risk collapsing 90-day trade reprieve.
China Ministry of Commerce has fired back at President Trump’s recent allegations that Beijing broke the terms of their latest trade agreement, calling the accusations “baseless” and “erroneous.” In a strongly worded statement early Monday, China said the United States had “severely undermined” the May 12 trade truce by rolling out new “discriminatory restrictive measures” — including visa restrictions, tech sanctions, and bans on Huawei-linked AI chips.
The deal, reached last month in Geneva, was meant to cool tensions by temporarily lowering tariffs — US duties dropped from 145% to 30%, and China cut its import taxes to 10% for 90 days.
Trump’s remarks last week, claiming China had “totally violated” the pact, followed White House plans to double steel and aluminium tariffs and launch tougher tech sanctions targeting Chinese firms abroad.(More about: “So much for being Mr. NICE GUY” – Trump fumes as US-China trade tensions flare up again)
China now warns it will “safeguard its legitimate rights and interests” if US escalations continue, raising concerns that the fragile truce may break down well before the deadline.
Meanwhile, US officials like Trade Representative Jamieson Greer say China is “slow-rolling compliance” — particularly in restoring rare earth mineral exports vital to US industries.
As both sides dig in, hopes for a lasting deal between the world’s top two economies appear dimming fast — risking another round of tariff escalation and market volatility.
