President Donald Trump is set to interview Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller on Wednesday as he weighs candidates to lead the US central bank, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The process is moving quickly, though meetings could still be delayed or canceled as Trump continues deliberations, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Last week, Trump interviewed former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh and has publicly said he is leaning toward Warsh or National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett. Hassett has long been viewed as the frontrunner, but his momentum has slowed as Warsh and now Waller remain in contention.
Prediction market Kalshi currently assigns a 50% probability to Hassett becoming Fed chair, compared with 32% for Warsh and 15% for Waller.
Waller is widely seen as a longer shot, largely because he lacks the close personal ties to Trump that Warsh and Hassett have, according to the Journal.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday that one or two more interviews with Fed chair candidates could take place this week and next, before he makes a recommendation to Trump.
