OpenAI will soon loosen its long-standing NSFW restrictions, introducing an adults-only version of ChatGPT that permits erotic content.
CEO Sam Altman announced that beginning December 2025, verified adult users will gain access to a “less censored” ChatGPT experience under the company’s new principle to “treat adult users like adults.”
Altman said earlier safety concerns had made ChatGPT “too restrictive,” but new moderation tools and parental controls now allow OpenAI to “safely relax the restrictions in most cases.”
The update follows OpenAI’s February language change clarifying that only sexual content involving minors would remain fully prohibited. The new rollout will coincide with the launch of customizable ChatGPT “personalities” and expanded safety oversight through an eight-member AI well-being council.
