The Financial Times reports that the European Commission is considering delaying parts of its landmark AI Act following pressure from major tech firms and the Trump administration, which has warned the rules could spark trade tensions.

Companies including Meta and Alphabet have lobbied Brussels for months, arguing that overly strict AI rules could stifle innovation. A senior EU official told the FT that the bloc has been in “active discussions” with Washington ahead of a planned simplification package set for November 19.

While officials said the EU remains “fully behind the AI Act and its objectives,” they confirmed that talks are ongoing over “targeted implementation delays.”

The AI Act officially took effect in August 2024, though most provisions are being phased in over the next few years.
