Tesla shareholders, ~75% in favor of Elon Musk’s colossal compensation plan, have approved a record-breaking compensation plan that could hand CEO Elon Musk up to $1 trillion over the next decade, the biggest in corporate history. The package, tied entirely to performance milestones, could ultimately be worth around $878 billion after repayments, keeping Musk at Tesla’s helm for another 10 years and tying his fortune to the company’s long-term growth.
What’s in the package
- No salary/cash; up to 423.7M additional shares if Tesla hits a ladder of goals.
- Targets include: 20M vehicles over 10 years; 1M robotaxis on the road; 10M FSD subscriptions; profits scaling toward $400B; and market-cap steps from $2T up to $8.5T by 2035.
- Missing targets means Musk gets zero for those tranches. Reuters’ analysis suggests partial achievement could still be worth $50B+.
Musk’s new promises & timelines
Chips: Tesla will “likely” build a gigantic chip fab (“Tesla terra-fab”) to meet AI/robotics demand; still uses TSMC/Samsung and may work with Intel. He said Tesla’s in-house AI5 chip aims for ~⅓ the power of Nvidia Blackwell at <10% of the cost (for Tesla’s own workloads).

Robotaxi: Cybercab—no pedals/steering wheel—targeted to start production in April.

FSD: Within “a month or two,” Musk says Tesla could enable unsupervised FSD that effectively lets owners text while the car drives (regulatory/safety review implied but not detailed).

Optimus: The humanoid robot is Musk’s “new book,” envisioned to scale from 1M to 10M+ units/year, eventually 100M–1B annually—claims include performing surgery “beyond human” precision and massive economic impact.

If Tesla even partially delivers—on chips, software, and robot labor—its business mix could tilt from auto to AI/robotics and services, with chip capacity the main choke point. For now, the vote ties Musk to Tesla’s next decade—and sets a towering bar for what he must build to get paid.
