French mobile apps and games publisher Voodoo has acquired social media app BeReal for €500 million. BeReal’s co-founder and CEO, Alexis Barreyat, will leave the company after a transition period, with Aymeric Roffé, CEO of Voodoo’s social media app Wizz, taking over as the new CEO.
BeReal, known for its emphasis on unfiltered, authentic connections, has over 40 million active users. Despite its early success, the company faced growth challenges and funding issues, prompting the search for a buyer.
Voodoo plans to leverage its expertise in mobile product development to enhance BeReal, focusing on new feature releases and growth through organic and paid marketing. BeReal’s unique approach allows users to post real moments daily without the pressure of likes or followers, fostering genuine connections.
Alexandre Yazdi, Voodoo co-founder and CEO, expressed excitement about the acquisition, highlighting the potential to scale BeReal into a major social network. The acquisition aims to capitalize on BeReal’s popularity in key markets, including the U.S., Japan, and France, where half of its users engage with the app at least six days a week.
