U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris announced more than $1.5 billion in aid for Ukraine’s energy sector and humanitarian needs, reaffirming America’s support amidst Russia’s 27-month invasion. The announcement came during the Ukraine peace summit in Lucerne, Switzerland, where Harris met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

“This war remains an utter failure for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” Harris stated, emphasizing the importance of upholding international norms.

The aid package includes $500 million in new energy assistance and reallocates $324 million for emergency energy infrastructure repairs. These efforts aim to bolster Ukraine’s resilience and recovery from recent attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Additionally, Harris announced over $379 million in humanitarian assistance to provide food, health services, shelter, and sanitation for millions of Ukrainians affected by the war.

Harris is attending the summit on behalf of President Joe Biden, who is returning to the U.S. after the G7 summit in Italy. National security adviser Jake Sullivan will represent the U.S. on Sunday to establish working groups on Ukrainian children’s return from Russia and energy security.
