The US Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) has taken a softer stance on crypto in its 2025 annual report, signalling a major shift in Washington’s regulatory tone. The council credited the GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump in July, for providing long-awaited federal clarity on stablecoins and crypto assets.

The report marks a sharp departure from FSOC’s earlier warnings about digital assets posing systemic risks. It says the new framework allows banks and institutions to engage in crypto-related activities “consistent with safety, soundness, and existing laws.” The council dropped language used in past reports that labelled stablecoins as highly vulnerable to runs or concentration risks.

Under the GENIUS Act, stablecoin issuers must now follow reserve, disclosure, and compliance standards—bringing them fully under federal oversight. That, analysts say, has transformed crypto from an unregulated threat into a supervised financial segment.

“What changed isn’t that stablecoins suddenly became safe, it’s that the US finally put a federal wrapper around them,” said Yan Ketelers, CMO at Human. tech. “The GENIUS Act gave regulators something concrete to point to. Risks didn’t vanish, but they became governable.”

The FSOC also confirmed that federal banking agencies have rolled back restrictive guidance from 2023, clearing banks to hold digital assets, offer custody services, and participate in tokenization pilots without prior “no-objection” letters.

The report further downplayed concerns about crypto’s link to illicit finance, stating that most blockchain activity is now tied to legitimate use cases.

The new approach aligns with President Trump’s goal of integrating crypto into the broader US economy. During the GENIUS Act signing, Trump called it “a landmark step toward restoring American financial leadership.”

While the US now promotes stablecoin innovation, European regulators remain cautious. The UK, however, is preparing similar legislation to bring crypto firms under the Financial Conduct Authority by 2027, mirroring Washington’s direction.

As Will Beeson, CEO of Uniform Labs, put it: “If the US is opening doors to stablecoin growth, other nations can’t afford to keep them closed.”

The 26-year-old was beaten and shoved into a stolen vehicle by four assailants who demanded €50,000 in cryptocurrency.

But their plan unraveled when the trader — who has built a modest TikTok following of 40,000 — showed them his account balance and explained he couldn’t pay. After verifying he was effectively broke, the kidnappers released him unharmed on Saturday.

French police on high alert

The case is now being handled by France’s Organized and Specialized Crime Division, which has issued the trader six days of official work incapacity leave due to the incident.

It’s part of a troubling trend. France has experienced a surge in crypto-linked abductions in recent months — often targeting entrepreneurs or their families.

On May 13, the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, CEO of French crypto exchange Paymium, were nearly kidnapped.
On May 3, police freed the father of another crypto entrepreneur, who had been held for days and had a finger severed during a €7 million ransom attempt.

#image_title

Network of kidnappers uncovered

The French prosecutor’s office has taken aggressive action. On May 31, 25 suspects were charged in connection to multiple coordinated plots targeting crypto figures. One week later, on June 4, a suspected ringleader was arrested in Morocco.

Law enforcement sources suggest the attacks are being driven by criminal networks exploiting social media visibility.

Crypto may be decentralized — but criminals are watching TikTok. In France, a wave of real-world violence is colliding with digital assets, forcing both users and regulators to take new precautions.

By leveraging the credibility of high-profile names like Visa and Dean Norris, the scammers managed to amplify the reach of their fraudulent activities.

Users were redirected to fraudulent websites claiming to offer exclusive token sales, but instead, their funds were siphoned away. This exploit demonstrates the evolving tactics scammers employ to capitalize on the booming cryptocurrency market.

Impact on the Community

Crypto Investors Targeted: The attack targeted retail investors eager to participate in Solana-related projects, exploiting their trust in recognized names.

Rising Scam Trends: This incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance as scams involving cryptocurrency and social media continue to rise.

Cybersecurity analysts point out that scammers increasingly rely on social engineering tactics to exploit high-profile platforms. The attack also highlights vulnerabilities in account security measures and the urgent need for enhanced protections on social media platforms.

This event serves as a reminder for individuals and organizations to exercise caution while interacting with cryptocurrency promotions online.
Historically, altcoin seasons have been marked by significant price rallies for non-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies.

In the 2017-2018 cycle, the altcoin market experienced its most explosive growth, with coins like Ether ETHUSD, XRP XRPUSD, and Litecoin LTCUSD posting record-breaking gains.

Crypto analyst Ali Martinez argues that the sheer number of altcoins now makes the possibility of a sustained altseason unlikely.

“Today, there are over 36.4 million altcoins, compared to fewer than 3,000 during the 2017-2018 alt season and even fewer than 500 altcoins in 2013-2014,” Martinez posted on X, citing data from Dune Analytics. “With such massive supply, the market has changed significantly.”

Supply greater than demand

Echoing this sentiment, economist Alex Krüger noted how the oversupply of tokens affects market behavior.

“Too many tokens. Infinite more to come. Supply of tokens is greater than demand. This illustrates why expecting an ‘altseason’ where everything goes up for an extended period of time is misplaced,” Krüger wrote on X. He predicted that future alt seasons would be shorter, lasting only “a few days to a few weeks at most.”

Krüger also pointed out the challenges for investors, noting that the abundance of options makes effective portfolio management more difficult:

“Being a good coin picker is now very hard. Just as being a good stocks picker is also very hard.”

Pseudonymous crypto trader Ash Crypto raised concerns about the dilution of the altcoin market, blaming the proliferation of memecoins and low-quality tokens.

“Market is diluted […] exchanges [are] only listing memes to grab volume and grow their user base. Retail buys these memes and [is] down 80% in a week and then quit,” he said, criticizing the behavior of crypto exchanges.

Meanwhile, Ki Young Ju, CEO of CryptoQuant, compared altcoins to Bitcoin, stating, “Only a few altcoin projects with strong use cases and narratives will survive.”

Bitcoin has doubled its market cap since 2021 to $2.07 trillion, while the total altcoin market capitalization remains at $1.6 trillion, about 15.8% below its all-time high of $1.9 trillion, reached during a brief rally in December 2024.

Institutional Interest could drive select altcoins

However, not all analysts are bearish on altcoins.

Michaël van de Poppe predicts that certain utility-focused coins could attract institutional interest, saying, “I think that we’ll also see real utility coins take the spotlight as institutional interest continues to grow.”

Van de Poppe further noted that Ethereum might lead the next rally, describing ETH as “the most hated rally of 2025.”

The most important financial story of 2025 isn’t what you think: While everyone’s distracted by the $TRUMP coin’s rise… A $207 billion revolution is quietly transforming the global financial system. Here’s why this number will be $10 trillion in the next 4 years:

History often rhymes. In 2017, Trump had to hand over his business empire to his sons due to conflicts of interest. The Trump Organization was placed in a trust controlled by his family. Now, he’s done something similar with his digital assets…

This pre-emptive move is brilliant: By distancing himself from direct control of his digital assets before taking office… He’s created a fascinating new dynamic in presidential history. But here’s where it gets revolutionary:

For the first time, we have a financial instrument that directly reflects presidential performance. Every policy win, every diplomatic victory, every economic decision… Will be immediately priced into the market. And this creates an unprecedented feedback loop:

While the meme coin grabs headlines, something more profound is happening: The stablecoin market has quietly grown to $207 billion. This isn’t just another crypto milestone. It signals a fundamental shift in how value moves:

Think about the implications:

A president incentivized to boost crypto adoption

Regulatory clarity becoming inevitable

Global markets forced to embrace digital assets

But there’s an even bigger story developing:

93% of central banks are now working on digital currencies. 60% have accelerated their plans due to recent crypto developments. And 81% expect to issue their own digital currency. This creates a perfect storm:

Why? Because for the first time:

Presidential interests align with crypto adoption

Global regulatory barriers are falling

Institutional money is flowing in

The implications are staggering:

Cross-border payments costs will drop by 40-80%. Blockchain technology will boost global GDP by $2.1 trillion by 2030. Nearly half of this growth will come from emerging markets. But here’s the key insight:

The meme coin isn’t just a token – it’s the world’s most powerful marketing campaign for crypto. Every headline, every price swing, every viral moment… Drives more attention to digital assets. And this reveals something crucial:

Stablecoins are the real beneficiary:

They’re the safe haven during volatility

They’re the bridge to traditional finance

They’re the foundation for mass adoption

Here’s why this matters:

We’re not just witnessing a price movement. We’re seeing the birth of a new financial paradigm where: Presidential success, market dynamics, and technological adoption are perfectly aligned. And this changes everything:

The next four years won’t just be crypto-friendly. They’ll be the period when digital assets become too big to ignore. When stablecoins cross the chasm to mass adoption.

Donald Trump’s newly launched namesake meme coin has taken another tumble after the US president admitted he didn’t know much about it.

“I don’t know where it is. I don’t know much about it other than I launched it, other than it was very successful,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question at a Jan. 21 press conference announcing a $500 billion artificial intelligence investment venture.

“I haven’t checked it. Where is it today?” he asked. After he was told his token made billions, he said, “Several billion … that’s peanuts for these guys” — pointing behind him to OpenAI boss Sam Altman, Oracle tech chief Larry Ellison and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son.

$TRUMP crashes over -30% after Trump says "I don't know very much about it." Then corrected, worth to say.#WednesdayMotivation pic.twitter.com/9yi7JaXkud
— Finblog.com (@FinBlog452366) January 22, 2025

The Official Trump (TRUMP) meme coin has dropped from a 24-hour high of over $48 to trade around $42. The token is down over 43% since its peak high of $73.43 on Jan. 19, according to CoinGecko.

Trump’s crypto team conducted a surprise launch of the meme coin on Jan. 18.
“Trump just nuked his own meme coin,” said Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart in response to Trump’s comments.

Financial outlet The Kobeissi Letter commented that “it seems as though Donald Trump is not actively involved with the launch of TRUMP. This also explains the absence of comments since it launched.”

Adding to TRUMP’s decline was the launch of a namesake meme coin by First Lady Melania Trump. Melania Meme (MELANIA) topped $13 in an all-time high on Jan. 20 but has since tanked 68% to just over $4.

The crypto community has been sceptical about the president’s meme coin, with some correctly predicting that it would sell off after the inauguration.

There are 200 million TRUMP currently in circulation, and supply will grow to a total of 1 billion coins over three years, according to a statement on the token’s website.

Market Cap Misinterpretation:
At its peak, the $TRUMP coin had a valuation of $6 billion and a fully diluted market value of $30 billion. However, market capitalization is not equivalent to actual wealth, as it only reflects the theoretical total value of all tokens at a given price.

Trump’s Lack of Ownership:
There is no evidence Trump holds any $TRUMP tokens or has financial ties to the coin. The project was developed by independent creators without Trump’s involvement or endorsement.

Speculative Hype:
The coin’s surge in value was driven by social media frenzy and speculative trading, with no foundational backing from Trump or his businesses.

Cryptocurrency Dynamics:
In crypto markets, a coin’s market cap can rise or fall dramatically based on trading activity and perceived hype, but this doesn’t mean the creators or associated figures automatically gain the entire market value.

The speculation linking Donald Trump to the $TRUMP memecoin is unfounded. While the coin gained massive popularity, its valuation does not translate to real wealth for Trump. This serves as a reminder of the speculative and volatile nature of cryptocurrency markets.
